The Bridgeside Research Forum is a seminar given by postdocs and graduate students every Friday from 12-1 pm during the academic year. Most weeks consist of two 30-minute talks, but there will be an occasional hour-long special seminar from an invited guest too.
The goal of this forum is to provide an opportunity for trainees to gain valuable experience presenting their research to a broad scientific community. The topics are diverse each week, so there is sure to be something for everyone. All are welcome to attend and enjoy a free lunch while you are there!

The centromere is a central genetic element responsible for accurate chromosome segregation during cell division. Functional centromeres are specified epigenetically through the stable acquisition of CENP-A, a histone H3 variant found exclusively in nucleosomes at all active centromeres. Using genome-wide approaches, we recently discovered that DNA replication serves as an error correction mechanism that restricts CENP-A to centromeres by removing it from the ectopic sites of deposition at the chromosome arms, while maintaining the positions of centromere-bound CENP-A with high precision throughout DNA replication. This error correction mechanism explains how centromere identity is epigenetically maintained and restricted to one position on the chromosome, thereby suppressing genome instability and ensuring long-term faithful chromosome inheritance.

The Provost’s Inaugural Lecture series invites University of Pittsburgh faculty members to give a lecture marking their recent appointments to endowed chairs. Dr. Aizenstein’s research focuses on cognitive and affective neuroscience of aging, late-life depression, and multimodal neuroimaging methods.

Rusland Medzhitov, PhD, Sterling Professor of Immunobiology at Yale University and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, will present the 2019 Dickson Prize in Medicine Lecture, “Host Defense Strategies,” as part of Science 2019, the University of Pittsburgh’s annual celebration of science and technology. The Dickson Prize in Medicine is the highest honor awarded by Pitt’s School of Medicine.
Medzhitov is credited with many fundamental discoveries concerning the importance of Toll-like receptors in controlling adaptive immunity, infections, chronic inflammation, and tumor growth. Many drug companies are actively targeting these receptors in hopes of treating cancer, sepsis, and inflammatory disease.

It is well established that species differences exist in susceptibility to infectious diseases. Additionally, significant species-specific differences exist in the immune response to infectious agents and neoplasia. To overcome the species-specific difference between rodents and humans, we have reconstituted immunodeficient rodents with requisite human organ systems for investigating sexually transmitted diseases (i.e. HIV) and immuno-oncology (i.e. ovarian cancer).
