UPMC Hillman Cancer Center would like to welcome Anthony (Tony) R. Cillo, PhD, effective August 1, 2023. Dr. Cillo is an assistant professor in the Department of Immunology at the University of Pittsburgh and a member of the Tumor Microenvironment Center and the Cancer Immunotherapy and Immunotherapy Program at UPMC Hillman.
Dr. Cillo will develop an active research program focusing on cancer immunology, immunotherapy, and systems immunology, focusing on unraveling the complex interplay of various components of the immune system within the tumor microenvironment. By collaborating with basic research and clinical faculty across the cancer center, the Cancer Immunotherapy and Immunotherapy Program, and the Department of Immunology, Dr. Cillo’s laboratory will develop innovative strategies to harness the immune system for the treatment of cancer.
Dr. Cillo was most recently a research scientist in Dario Vignali’s lab, where he had previously been a postdoctoral associate, primarily working on immunoregulatory mechanisms in solid tumors.
He has authored 36 peer-reviewed publications and was first author on 12. Dr. Cillo has presented his research locally, nationally and internationally. He has received a number of awards and accolades including first place in the PhD/Postdoctoral researcher category for the ImmunoOncology Young Investigators’ Forum, and he is a recipient of our own Hillman Postdoctoral Fellow for Innovative Cancer Research.
Dr. Cillo earned his PhD through the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Graduate Program at Pitt and his B.S. in Cell Biology/Biochemistry from Bucknell University.
