Research Executive Advisory Committee

The Research Executive Advisory Committee (REAC) is focused on research-related issues of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. The Director of UPMC Hillman serves as chair of this committee, which also includes other UPMC Hillman leaders who have responsibilities for academic and research activities. REAC meets twice per month to discuss a broad range of research issues, including: basic, translational, and clinical research; overall strategic planning to achieve future goals; and assessment of needs and opportunities for recruitment and infrastructure development.

Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) Research Program Leaders

More than 300 members, representing 42 University of Pittsburgh departments, are working together to improve the understanding of cancer and to develop new lifesaving procedures in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. UPMC Hillman Cancer Center research programs range from basic science programs that examine the molecular basis of cancer development and progression in the laboratory, to translational and clinical programs that implement novel laboratory findings into clinical trials in humans, to population-based programs that focus on cancer prevention, epidemiology, and biobehavioral factors in cancer.

Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) Shared Resource Directors

Shared Resources at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center include state-of-the-art facilities that provide infrastructure, technology, support, and expertise to enhance basic, translational, and clinical cancer research with a goal to provide outstanding service at reasonable cost. In addition to standard service offerings, most facilities will work with researchers to provide customized procedures as needed. Shared Resource Directors provide expert consultation and, in some cases, may participate as co-investigators on research faculty grants.

Committee for Excellence in Cancer Education and Training

The Committee for Excellence in Cancer Education and Training (CECET) at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center meets quarterly to review the breadth, depth, accessibility, and effectiveness of available education and training opportunities and to develop recommendations regarding potential new offerings.

Committee for Health Equity and Community Outreach & Engagement

The Committee for Health Equity and Community Outreach & Engagement (CHECOE) at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center meets monthly to identify the cancer problems and disparities affecting western Pennsylvanians and to develop, implement, and monitor progress on research and implementation efforts aimed at amelioration.

External Advisory Board

The UPMC Hillman Cancer Center External Scientific Advisory Board (EAB) includes prominent physicians, scientists, and cancer center directors who are nationally and internationally recognized for their scientific and clinical contributions. The Board convenes annually to review programs and activities, and to provide detailed advice on a wide range of scientific and organizational issues, including development of new research programs, evaluation of existing programs, recruitment of key scientific leadership, review of shared facilities, and ad hoc review of key issues. Input from the Board is extremely valuable for our National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG).

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Council

The UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Council, which includes 40 of Pittsburgh’s prominent leaders, provides advice and support to the executive management of UPMC Hillman. Council members serve as ambassadors to the community to promote the work of UPMC Hillman.

Council members annually recognize faculty, who have been nominated by their peers, for their commitment to improving the understanding of cancer biology or providing compassionate patient care; and staff, who have given outstanding service to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.

Council members also help to secure funding to support research and clinical outreach efforts, and to promote relationships between faculty and members of the business community that help to guide technology-transfer activities.
