Norman Wolmark, MD, received the Medallion for the Advancement of Surgical Care from the American Surgical Association this month. The American Surgical Association is our nation’s oldest and most prestigious surgical association.
Dr. Wolmark has contributed to some of the most important advances in surgical oncology over the past four decades. He received his medical degree from McGill University and trained in surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. This was followed by surgical oncology training at both the Surgery Branch of the National Cancer Institute and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Joining the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh in 1979, Dr. Wolmark rapidly rose through the ranks to become Professor of Surgery and the inaugural Mark M. Ravitch Professor of Surgery. Dr. Wolmark assumed the Chairmanship of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) in 1994, a position he has held to the present.
Among his other notable accolades are a Giant of Cancer Care Award from Onc Live, a Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Surgical Oncology, and the Gianni Bonadonna Breast Cancer Award from ASCO.
