Saiful Huq, PhD, FAAPM, FInstP, Director of the Medical Physics Division at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, received the William D. Coolidge Gold Medal Award from the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) for his distinguished career and significant impact on the science and practice of medical physics. The award, the highest honor bestowed by the AAPM, was presented during the AAPM 65th Annual Meeting & Exhibition on July 24, 2023, in Houston, TX.
Huq, who served as president of the AAPM in 2020 and chairman of the AAPM Board of Directors in 2021, has been involved in medical physics clinical research for more than 30 years. He joined UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in 2004 and currently oversees the medical physics operations at 26 radiation oncology sites within the UPMC Hillman network and provides guidance for four sites in Ireland and Italy. His research focuses on radiation metrology, dosimetry, biology guided radiotherapy, and quality management.
Certified by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiological Physics, Huq established the medical physics residency program at UPMC through the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs and has mentored numerous students, residents, and postdocs. He has more than 170 peer-reviewed publications and has given more than 225 invited presentations globally.
Huq has also served on the International Advisory Board for the journal Physics in Medicine and Biology; as a reviewer and guest associate editor for major peer-reviewed journals in the field of medical physics; and is the founding member of the editorial board of the Journal of Biomedical Physics and Engineering Express.
Huq is a strong advocate of improving the quality of care of cancer patients globally, particularly in low-and middle-income countries, and has contributed significantly towards education and training of medical physicists in Africa, South Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East.
