Norman Wolmark, MD, FACS, FRCSC, a member of the leadership team at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and professor of surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, has been awarded the 2022 Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction in Clinical Research from Susan G. Komen®, their marquee scientific award.
He is recognized for “his outstanding contributions to the advancement of clinical care for breast cancer patients.” The organization goes on to say, “His work has radically changed the clinical landscape by establishing practice-changing and patient-focused surgical procedures, including breast conserving surgery as the standard of care for breast cancer, eliminating the need for radical mastectomy and improving the quality of life for patients.”
Dr. Wolmark has been a longtime leader of the NSABP (National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project) Foundation, Inc. and chair of NRG Oncology, a non-profit research organization that conducts oncologic clinical research and broadly disseminates study results to inform clinical decision making and healthcare policy and that combines the NSABP, the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), and the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG).
