Team Minnow Tank Competition

Calling all Trainees! Jump in the tank and get funding for you and your team’s innovative research ideas!

Do you have a new, intriguing research idea to advance you and your team’s research? Just need some pilot funding to get things going? Thinking about the next steps of your research career and have an excellent idea to take your research in a new direction? This is your chance to present your idea, get feedback, and get UPMC Hillman Cancer Center support!

The UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Scientific Retreat has a special session — Team Minnow Tank — for trainees (along with their PIs) to propose R21-like projects for up to $10,000 in support. Applications that prominently feature the ideas, work, and development of trainees are encouraged. No pilot data are necessary.

The deadline is August 14th at 5 p.m.

Submission Requirements and Instructions

A Letter of Intent (LOI; 1 page maximum) that includes:
(1) the project title and hypothesis
(2) names of the principal investigator and trainee leading the project
(3) an outline of the project background/significance, aim(s), and methods
(4) a brief discussion of the project’s potential impact and future directions
(5) a discussion of role of principal investigator and trainee in conducting the project
(6) brief statement regarding the project’s timeline
(7) budget justification

Applications should be merged into a single PDF and emailed to Serena Holliday (hollidaysm3@upmc.edu) by 5 p.m. on August 14, 2023.

Those that are reviewed and selected will present their proposal at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Scientific Retreat in front of a panel of judges.
