We are pleased to welcome Jeffrey Bednarski, MD, PhD, to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center as a member of our Genome Stability Research Program. Dr. Bednarski joined UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh as Chief of the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Stem Cell Transplantation and Director of the Mario Lemieux Institute for Pediatric Cancer Research at the beginning of June.

Dr. Bednarski came from St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where he led research and clinical efforts focused on leukemia, immune deficiencies, and stem cell biology. His research aims to understand the molecular mechanisms that regulate early hematopoeisis and B cell lymphopoeisis, and specially how signals induced by DNA damage activate cellular programs that promote normal differentiation and suppress leukemogenesis. He has led clinical trials aimed at improving bone marrow transplantation for patients with immune deficiencies and advancing immune-based therapies for children with leukemia.

Dr. Bednarski earned his medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan and completed his pediatric residency and hematology/oncology fellowship at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.

His expertise will enhance opportunities for collaboration across our basic, translational, and clinical research programs while expanding our capabilities in pediatric oncology, genome stability, immunotherapy, cell therapy, and for our research strategic priority of cancer across the lifespan.
