UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is pleased to welcome Renfeng Li, PhD. Dr. Li joined January 1, 2023 and is associate professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and a member of the Cancer Virology research program at UPMC Hillman.
His research interests include Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human papillomavirus (HPV), and virus-associated cancer. Dr. Li joined from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he was a member of the Massey Cancer Center since 2014. There, he established an independent research lab with focus on EBV pathogenesis, and, over the past several years, his lab has focused on host restriction factors in controlling herpesvirus replication and viral evasion mechanisms. Dr. Li’s research resulted in a series of publications in PLOS Pathogens, mBio, and Cell Reports.
Dr. Li is an active member of the scientific community, serving as an editorial board member for the Journal of Virology, Viruses, and Frontiers in Genome Editing, as a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals, and as a panel reviewer for institutions. He is also a member of a number of scientific societies and has received several research grants, including a National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 grant and an American Cancer Society research scholar grant.
Dr. Li obtained his PhD at Tsinghua University and completed his Postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins University. Supported by a NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00), he also obtained extensive training in quantitative proteomics.
